Fundación Marillac-Colegio La Milagrosais situated in Úbeda, a town in the centre of Jaén province - a historic town known for its 16th century architecture, and which is also one of the main centres of olive oil production in the province, and indeed the whole of Spain.Úbeda is also a centre for services for the surrounding region, and has many government departments, banks and other such businesses, which service the many towns and villages which surround it. There is also a small industrial sector, which mainly services the olive industry through the production of farm machinery. There is a growing tourism sector, too.

Overall, the school caters to many socio-economic groups. Úbeda is a wealthy town for Andalusia, given that there is an established number of landowning families, and this brings money into the town every harvest, and supports the services industry. The sizeable state sector in the town also means that there is an established middle-class.

Our school is a mixed school teaching around 600 children from 3-16 years old, in two parts, a lower school for the younger children, and an upper school for the older children. In term of staff, there are around 40 teachers and we have a ‘bilingual’ group of around 15 teachers. We are trying to promote an integral education where we can get the greatest potential out of our students. We have a strong department dealing with special needs, catering for children that come from lower socio-economic spheres as well as the less able. These students attend regular classes but follow a personalized curriculum with the aid of support teachers. The majority of our students comes from middle-class families and do not have particular problems in learning, but we have also students coming from problematic economical and/or social contexts, foreign children, students with relational and/or learning disabilities. The aim of the school is to guarantee each of them to grow up developing knowledge, abilities and competences starting from the respect of their needs, their attitudes and potentials, according to the requests of their families.

So we try to adapt the national programme to specific demands adopting flexibility in contents and methods, promoting integration, searching for new strategies, including extra school activities, etc.

As extra activities, we have a sports, extra English lesson, guitar, choir, drama, dancing and we are in the process of introducing a new Art activity, which could be useful for the project....
